Elengedni az ön által felépített céget mindig érzelmi döntés. A cég az alapító gyermeke, de ahogy a gyerek is felnő, idővel a cég is megérhet arra, hogy leváljon "szülőatyjáról". Ez a leválás akkor esedékes, ha az alapító vállalkozó már kihozta belőle amit akart, megvalósította elképzelésit.

Növekedő vállalkozásokat sokkal könnyebb jobb áron eladni, mint a csúcson túljutott céget. Ennek az oka, hogy a növekedő céget az előrevetített magasabb cash flow-k figyelembe vételével vesznek meg, míg egy cégnél a vevő az aktuális pénzáramok fenntarthatóságát is megkérdőjelezi.

A növekvő cég megvásárlásánál a vevőt vonzza a "potenciál": úgy érzi, hogy kibontakozó lehetőségbe vásárolja be magát. Ha a csúcson túljutott a cég, a befektetőnek elő kell állnia az újabb értékteremtés "nagy ötletével".
A növekedést a régi tulaj már nem tudja biztosítani - és így eladni sem. Az értéket a vevő teremti majd meg, és - érthető módon - a saját majdani munkáját nem hajlandó megfizetni az eladónak.
